Managing content security

Protecting Pay TV revenue
Enabling content business models

Prevention - Detection - ResponseThe core of Nagravision's Digital TV business is the generation and protection of service provider revenues, so content security continues to be our clear and uncompromised focus. Facing an increasingly competitive environment in digital media, revenue protection does not comprise the delivery of a single technology but rather the provision of a continuous service built on four pillars:

  • Prevention by advanced technology and regular introduction of new security generations
  • Early detection of piracy activity in the field
  • Countermeasures to react effectively against emerging attack models
  • Legal actions against pirates

Conditional access
New generation of solutions

A series of new, advanced security solutions has been developed, in order to offer diversified security to the operators whilst at the same time introducing new and innovative functionality. These solutions benefit from major progress in the protection of smart card against attacks and leverage multi- faceted anti-piracy mechanisms incorporated at both the smart card and at the decoder level. In 2007, the first series of cards based on two of these new families were deployed successfully in several key markets.

Nagravision continues to strengthen its dynamic counter- measures and anti-piracy activities, providing on-going support to operators and helping them achieve the best balance of total cost of ownership againsz revenue opportunities.

Removable security module

Through its company SmarDTV subsidiary, the Kudelski Group addresses the needs of the rapidly expanding market for removable security modules used in integrated digital television sets increasingly being sold worldwide.

These television sets features a Common Interface (CI) into which a conditional access module (CAM) can be inserted, making the use of a separate decoder superfluous. SmarDTV is a world leader in the development and production of these conditional access modules. In 2007, the company sold more than 1.3 million modules throughout the world, representing a growth of 50% over the previous year.

Watching TV on a computer is becoming more widespread. Millions of DVB tuners have been sold, enabling the reception on PCs of terrestrial, cable and satellite broadcast programs, and demand is growing.

Many of the new generation of computers contain an integrated TV reception capability. These systems are suitable for the reception of free-to-air TV content. However access to Pay TV content requires the use of additional security technology. SmarDTV’s newest product line consists of a compact dongle, the size of a USB drive, integrating the USB interface, the conditional access technology and a DVB tuner for digital terrestrial reception.
