ISSUE 04
Decembrer 2009

With IBC safely behind us we're now ramping up to CES in January in Las Vegas. A hot topic here will be the 'connected home' and giving control of content to the user. While still in its infancy, it's an area we're keen to support through our cutting-edge technology.

If you want a more technical peek at the 'connected home', delve into Tech Corner to hear about our NAGRA Media PRM (persistent rights management) solution. This 'connected home' enabler will give consumers access to all content without compromising rights protection for the content owner.

We also delve into the wonderful world of widgets benefits and discover how pay-TV operators are monetising them. This follows on from the article in our previous newsletter. There's information on CI+ (Common Interface Plus for copy protection) and how it's helping operators like CANAL+ explore new business models and bring content to more consumer electronic devices, including a link to the full white paper. Finally, you can get an insight into the growing 3D TV market from consumer electronics global lead Frank Dreyer and follow a Q&A session with the CTO from 3ality, a Nagravision partner.

There's a lot going on in the industry, including a lot of hype around certain technologies. We have a good idea of which ones are going to be successful.

ISSUE 03
July 2009

We’re already six months into one of the more interesting years from the economy’s perspective, and still bearing up well. From digital TV advancements to enhanced security measures, our customers are continually investing in their technology and content – which is good news for us!

One key topic in the news is ‘addressable advertising’ – and how digital TV can open up opportunities to create more tailored and relevant advertising for the viewer. Olivier Wellmann from OpenTV outlines his opinion and the various options available. Tying into the ever-increasing integration of the internet with TV platforms, we also feature a piece on widgets and how they’re helping to bridge the gap between internet and traditional TV content.

Also included is an interview with Pascal Dormal from Numericable on the VOD shopping mall they’re offering, and a piece on the pay digital TV market in Spain that shows what other European regions there are missing out on.

With Mobile World Congress, NAB, NCTA and ANGA now seemingly a long time ago, we’re building up to IBC in September. Expect some big announcements from us in Amsterdam this year – watch this space for more closer to the time.

ISSUE 02
April 2009

Well we’ve certainly hit the ground running in 2009. It’s going to be an interesting year with challenges for every industry. But for the digital TV market this means huge opportunities. With people staying in more, it allows us to offer more innovative ways of delivering content.

Mobile TV is still a key area of growth tying into ‘on the go’ communications and entertainment. Nagravision is enabling pay TV on the iPhone – an industry first – and new innovations are helping to bring high quality subscription content to the small screen.

In this issue UPC outlines the challenges and policies required for digital confidence to be an integral part of the chain, and we focus on SmarDTV achieving CI Plus certification and being used by Digital TV Labs. There’s also an article on Nagravision’s expansion into Taiwan and one on recent changes at the Kudelski Group – new board members Alex Osadzinski and Yves Pitton outline their views and strategies for the group.

We hope to see you at some of the trade shows this year (under events), where you can get a closer look at some of the latest innovations we’ve been working on.
