Almost coincidentally, the market has seen the introduction of a number of alternative mobile broadcasting technologies such as ATSC-M/H, CMMB, DVB-H, DVB-SH, ISDB-T, MediaFLO and T-DMB. One key strenght of NAGRA Media MOBILE solution is to remain standards agnostic.
In mature mobile TV environments, such as those in Korea and Japan, around half of the terminals used to watch TV are mobile phones, while the other half include Pocket TV's, portable media players, portable navigation devices, PC receivers and other in-car entertainment devices equipped with a tuner.
This trend clearly shows consumers’ growing appetite for the consumption of Mobile TV on a wide range of receivers. Beyond mobile TV on mobile phones, the non-voice terminal market is a clear business opportunity for service operators.

To enable and address this new market, Nagravision introduced the world’s first, fully operational end-to-end Conditional Access Solution based on a MicroSD Card ( NAGRA Media ACCESS OSF).
This solution uses the mass storage capability of the MicroSD card to pre-loaded or download music, movies and TV programs. It also offers the possibility of including a personalised environment with an operator's look and feel.
With NAGRA Media ACCESS OSF, service operators can now offer mobile TV service ubiquity through all forms of receivers; from handsets to portable mobile TV players while ensuring that their assets and TV revenues are correctly protected, parental controls are enforced, and possible mobile TV network access fees are collected.
Allowing the operator to remain in full control and ownership of the subscriber, NAGRA Media ACCESS OMA-BCAST is an open standardised SIM-based service protection system defined by the OMA (Open Mobile Alliance) members, including mobile operators.
Nagravision worked closely with its partners to ensure that future solutions, from the service protection platform to the SIM and handset, are interoperable.
In 2007, covering the entire mobile TV value chain, Nagravision was the first to successfully run a fully operational, end-to-end for mobile TV services with handsets and SIM partners based upon NAGRA Media ACCESS OMA-BCAST. Continuing to lead the mobile TV market, in 2008, Nagravision deployed the world’s first OMA BCAST Smartcard Profile platform for T-Mobile CZ, the leading mobile phone carrier in the Czech Republic. In line with T-Mobile's plans, Nagravision set up a complete ecosystem.
NAGRA Media ACCESS OMA-BCAST solution is based entirely on open standards, fully compliant with the BMCO launch profile as well as the OMA BCAST standards. Nagravision user & key management system offers full functionality for service protection as also specified by OMA BCAST for the Smartcard Profile.
Nagravision Conditional Access platform supports DVB Simulcrypt allowing operators to run DVB OSF and OMA BCAST Smartcard Profile service protection at the same time with the very same platform.
This also allows broadcasters to offer their mobile TV infrastructure to multiple, independent, and competing mobile TV operators.

Nagravision has always kept one step ahead by anticipating the explosion of the mobile TV market. The company pioneered DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) mobile TV services showing that service protection means much more than just securing content access; it is the powering force making the overall Mobile TV business work and matching the best business cases to service providers:
Nagravision's platform provides all of the functions needed to protect the broadcast services and content. It is available today as an extension to the existing family of Nagravision Conditional Access platforms or as a stand-alone system.
Nagravision solutions for delivering content over different types of networks ( Mobile, Satellite, Cable,...) are tightly integrated to allow mobile operators to deploy innovative services by combining the features of the broadcast and mobile environments.
Watch and download mobile content
TV offers a unique opportunity to cross-sell on-demand content associated with a given TV event. Allowing the viewer to buy and instantly download a ring tone or a music tune while watching their favorite music channel is only one example. Enticing the consumer to buy a derived product immediately once the underlying channel has stirred their awareness is a great way to increase media revenues.
Interactive aplications
The easier it is to interact with a TV show, the more people participate. This is perfectly illustrated by the success of SMS-based voting for reality shows that are mainly financed by the SMS revenues themselves. With mobile TV it is even easier for the viewer to participate. An interactive menu is overlaid on the show and the user can vote with two keystrokes. This ease of use encourages more people to vote and can thus provide additional revenues for both the mobile operators, content owners and broadcasters.
Push content
The network usage and efficiency can be maximised by “pushing” content accessed by a large number of subscribers through the broadcast network. At the same time, personalised content is transferred on a per-need basis using point-to-point delivery. The operator’s offering can, therefore, simultaneously be very broad as well as being cost-effective to deliver. Such a mix is impossible to realise with either broadcast or point-to-point delivery alone.
